Here's to a great 2014-15 school year!  Some things to remember:

1. Your sleep schedule will likely need to adjust in order to be awake and ready for the early school day.  To get to sleep earlier, put away all electronics at least an hour before bed.  Studies show that these (phones, computers, video games) make it harder for the brain to fall asleep. Try listening to music or reading for the last hour before bed!  And, hard as it may seem, try NOT to sleep in too late on weekends.  Our brains and bodies work better with a semi-regular sleep schedule.

2. You know that making nutritious food choices requires some thought and planning!  Pack healthy snacks to avoid the vending machine, such as nuts, fruit, string cheese and yogurt.  My fridge is available.  Try to avoid those sugary drinks that add so many calories and sweeteners to our diets.

3.  Finally, stress is a fact of life, and school can increase stress. Work on your time management skills, ask for help as soon as you need it, and pay attention to what people, places and activities  reduce YOUR stress.

Be sure to stop in and say hello!

I hope you all have a safe, happy and healthy summer vacation.  A few things to keep in mind (remember, I'm the Health teacher!)

Use sunscreen!  Tanning not only ages your skin prematurely, it greatly increases your risk of skin cancer later in life.

Hydrate!  You all know how important it is to drink enough water, so do it!  Remember, a headache is often a sign of dehydration, so reach for your water bottle before you try medication.

Have fun!  Make good choices, think about your risks and protectors, and enjoy the break.
