Blizzard Bag Lesson 2

SUGAR HIDE AND SEEK

The word on the street is that the typical American eats almost 500 calories a day in ADDED sugar...that is, sugar that is added to processed foods.  Five hundred calories...that is about a quarter of the calories that most of us need a day!

Why does this matter?  Well, 500 extra calories a day can add up to a pound of fat a week!   We need to be aware of how much sugar we consume, but that can be difficult, as you will see.  To start, read the attached article on teens and sugar consumption.

Now, let's think about foods we eat that are high in sugar.  There is a link below to play a word search online and find sugary foods that you should limit in your diet.  You will need to click the button that says "play online" and then the button for "new game".  IMPORTANT: the game will time you!  Leave a comment for me telling me how long it took you to find all the words to get credit for doing the word search.  Then come back here for your next task.

There are other dangers associated with too much sugar in our diets, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and dental cavities.  Should we watch the amount of added sugar we are eating?

  YES!

Should we read food labels to identify foods with added sugar?

  YES!

But it's tricky.  Added sugar goes by many other names.  Words that you may have never heard and make no sense to you, such as

Galactose

are actually...you guessed it...SUGAR.  And there are many, many more.

SUGAR IN DISGUISE

Here is a list of some of the many names that sugar can go by on food labels.  These words may not sound so sweet, but they are all types of SUGAR!

SUCROSE             LACTOSE

GLUCOSE

FRUCTOSE            DEXTROSE           MALTOSE

GALACTOSE       CORN SYRUP

MALT SYRUP         MAPLE SYRUP        MOLASSES

NECTARS

RAW SUGAR          BROWN SUGAR

For your next task, click on the worksheet below.  You will need to make a copy of the worksheet (File:Make a Copy), and rename it SUGAR: YOUR NAME. When you have completed this task, please SHARE the finished worksheet with me by clicking FILE and then SHARE to get credit for your work.  In the SHARE box type jfrench and my email will come up.

That's all for today!  To fully complete your lesson, you should have messaged me your time on the Sugary Foods Crossword, and completed the Invisible Sugars worksheet and shared it with me on Google Docs.  Keep in mind that hidden sugars are everywhere, and we should be careful to limit them in our diet to stay healthy!
